5 Signs of Hard Water in and Around Your Home

washing a plate with a sponge and a detergentWhen turning on a tap and watching water freely flow, we often don’t consider what is actually in tap water. Tap water is certainly not pure H20, it can become contaminated with other minerals that contain bacteria. When this occurs, it is referred to as ‘hard water’ and can cause health concerns for you and your family.

Read below for 5 signs your tap water in and around your home may be ‘hard water’ including:

  • Your water has an unpleasant taste or smell.
  • Soap scum on glass and dishes
  • Your shower head is blocked and water pressure low
  • Your skin or scalp is dry or irritated
  • Your clothes aren’t washing properly

Your water has an unpleasant taste or smell

One of the first signs of hard water in and around your home can be a change to the taste or smell of your water. When water has a metallic taste, it can be caused by mineral deposits from corroding pipes entering your water flow.

Your water leaves marks on glass and dishes

White spots on glass and dishes can be caused by calcium deposits, another sign and result of hard water. Glass panels in the shower or even shower curtains are often left with water marks from hard water as are dishes after being washed or in the dishwasher.

Your shower head is blocked and water pressure low

Deposits from hard water can block shower heads resulting in lower water pressure. You may clean or replace your shower head to unblock it so water can freely flow again, however until the hard water issue is fixed it will continue.

Your skin or scalp is dry or irritated

If you notice your skin has become dry and itchy and you cannot pinpoint a reason why, bathing or showering in hard water can be the culprit. As mineral deposits from hard water remain on the skin, they draw out moisture. The same can occur to the scalp and hair, your scalp can become itchy and hair become coarse and dry.

Mineral deposits in hard water such as calcium and magnesium don’t react well with soaps and detergents. The combination of the two can result in dirt and stains not being removed from clothes thoroughly when washing. Clothes can even lose their colour and their texture become coarse and scratchy.
